Fibromyalgia, Fatigue, Chronic Fatigue, Always Tired, Tired, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, CFSMost people only know one thing about chronic fatigue syndrome—that patients are really tired all the time, especially after any physical or mental strain. While it is true that tiredness that cannot be relieved with proper rest is one of the identifying marks of chronic fatigue syndrome, it is far from the only symptom.

What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

When four or more of these symptoms are present for an extended period of time (usually at least 6 months), a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome can be made.

  • Exhaustion that limits activity
  • Night sweats
  • Visual impairments
  • Chills
  • Widespread pain
  • Vertigo or dizziness
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Worsening headaches
  • IBS symptoms
  • Tender lymph nodes
  • Sore throat
  • Mood disorders

What Causes Chronic Fatigue?

Chronic fatigue is not just a matter of a lack of proper rest. Scientists have long been researching what causes this extreme fatigue to occur. Suggestions as to the underlying cause include:

  • Viral infections
  • Psychological stress
  • Changes in cortisol levels
  • An upper cervical misalignment

Upper cervical misalignments are a particularly interesting theory. First of all, this would indicate head or neck trauma in the patient’s history, but not necessarily anything significant or recent. These upper neck bones are very moveable, and even a mild injury can cause a misalignment, leading to a gradual onset of symptoms. Second, this is something very correctable.
