Migraines can have a serious, negative effect on those who suffer from them. A study of 138 migraine patients was performed so as to compare how their quality of life differed from those in a control group.

Study Results Tell About The Challenges of Having Migraines
The following facts were revealed about migraine sufferers – even if they are not in pain at the time. There was:
- Increased emotional suffering and distress
- Decreased quality and quantity of sleep
- Increased sensitivity to symptoms
- Less overall vitality
Many of those with migraines feel as if they must learn to live with this as part of life. However, at Balanced Living Chiropractic in Rochester Hills, Michigan, we take a different approach. We want everyone to enjoy each moment of the day without worrying if a migraine may hit. Is that possible?
Migraines and Proper Spinal Alignment
The spine has the important job of protecting the spinal cord. The C1 vertebra houses and protects the brainstem. Sometimes this bone shifts out of place due to accidents such as car crashes, sporting injuries, or simple trip and fall accidents. Anything impacting the head and causing the neck muscles to overextend can lead to a misaligned atlas bone, resulting in the symptoms of a migraine:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Throbbing head pain (usually on one side)
The reason for this lies in the fact that the brainstem sends important messages to the brain and body and vice versa. When a misalignment causes it to come under pressure, these signals become distorted.
A study was observed by Dr. Elster, an upper cervical chiropractor, that involved a 35-year-old female who was the victim of daily migraines along with tension headaches for over 12 years. After receiving upper cervical chiropractic care for 3 months, her migraines went away.
We use a method called NUCCA that involves gently encouraging the bones to move back into their proper position. This does not require us to pop or crack the neck to achieve positive results. The technique is more natural, thereby leading to longer lasting results.
